Nii Adjeidu Armar is a UK trained consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, minimal access (‘keyhole’) surgeon and fertility specialist who has recently joined the IMaH team of healthcare providers as a Visiting Consultant.

It is envisaged that he will help establish to the hospital as a major provider of minimal access operations as well as a comprehensive ‘one-stop’ Fertility Service.

His secondary education was at Achimota School; after which he went on to train at the Sheffield University Medical School in the UK to become a Medical doctor. He subsequently obtained specialist qualifications as an obstetrician and gynaecologist.

After a few years in clinical practice, he went on to become a Research Fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology (Birthright Research Fellow, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, UK) and was subsequently appointed Consultant Gynaecologist, Obstetrician and Fertility specialist at the Central Middlesex Hospital (and later, the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust), London in 1991.

He was also an honorary lecturer at the University College School of Medicine and later, an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK. He has several scientific publications to his name; these are readily accessible on the internet.

Dr Armar was in the Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer position for 20 years, and further developed his interests in the management of hormone and fertility problems, minimal access surgery (MAS) and surgery for benign (non-cancerous) gynaecological conditions.

Minimal Access Surgery (MAS, or keyhole surgery) involves the use of fine telescopes to perform a variety of operations which would otherwise involve the use of larger incisions or ‘cuts’ on the abdomen or other parts of the body.

Often referred to as ‘laparoscopic or hysteroscopic surgery’, the methods can be used for the investigation of infertility as well as the treatment of fibroids, removal of the uterus (hysterectomy), management of ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies and several other gynaecological conditions.

The ‘keyhole’ approach offers many advantages over conventional approaches, including a rapid recovery from even the most major of operations. One of his main aims is to teach these methods, and to spread the word about this approach to surgery, thereby minimising the recovery time from operations as well as the length of hospital stays wherever possible.

Mr Armar continues to lecture abroad on gynaecological conditions, fertility issues and women’s hormone problems. He has carried out many workshops on both infertility and keyhole surgery in other countries.

He was awarded the Ghanaian Professional Achievers (GPA) award (UK) for Medicine in 2006. In the past, he was a regular guest on television in the UK, commenting on and addressing the health issues and concerns of women and infertile couples.

Mr Armar fervently believes that armed with the right information, most women can make the right choices for themselves and thereby, guide the gynaecologists to help them overcome their difficulties. He has written several small booklets for patients and he hopes that these will provide the basic information they need to help them to participate more fully in any discussion of their problems.
